How cats living outside suffer without intervention:
The kittens multiply quickly- they get sick easily, get injured or attacked. Adult males fight & become injured. The reality is, even for ones who are adoptable, there simply aren't enough homes available.
TNR (trap-neuter-return) addresses the root cause: Overpopulation. By preventing births before they happen-- we can reduce suffering.
The cats lives improve greatly when they have access to shelter, a caretaker who feeds them daily + are spayed & neutered. The behavior over mating is stopped + the colony becomes stable.
The ear-tipping is done as part of the TNR program, which involves humanely trapping the cats, bringing them to the clinic for spay/neuter surgery & vaccination, then returning them back to their neighborhood & caretaker.
Ear-tipping involves removing a small portion of one of the ears while the cat is under anesthesia (asleep) for the surgery. It's the universally accepted way to signify the cat has been through the program, which means no new kittens will be born-- & that’s a very good thing.
TNR is the best way to humanely reduce the population.
